From Head of School Dave Skeen

January 5

Dear SDS Learning Community,

In some ways this week is the shortest and longest week of the year. There is excitement in the return – seeing friends, talking about what happened, rekindling our curiosity in learning – and exhaustion in the revived pace of the school day and week. So, as we come to the close of this first week in January, I am sure we welcome the weekend – as wet as it may be.

At schools, we hold a unique place in the calendar in that we are halfway through our school year, yet just launching our calendar year with the opportunity to reset in terms of resolutions and commitments. It is a nice opportunity for us to model what it is to chart a course, reflect on the journey and adapt as needed to the world around us. That may mean an extra sit-down with a teacher, or an extra visit to the weight room, or spending time in the early morning art studio, but it is where our students begin to learn the art of adjustment which we hope leads to self-advocacy and eventually to self-starting students and lifelong learners.

Welcome back, and go Griffins.

Sincerely,

Dave
