From Head of School Dave Skeen

January 12

Dear SDS Learning Community,

Over the last few years, Spartanburg Day School has developed a portrait of a graduate. It states that Spartanburg Day School graduates are…

Purposeful
- in developing their intellect
- in building meaningful relationships
- in exploring their inner lives and the world beyond them

Confident
- in leading others
- in communicating clearly and effectively
- in cultivating agency related to their learning

Discerning
- in seizing opportunities
- in taking risks and navigating challenges

This afternoon we embark on a long weekend as we remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In fact, the contributions of Dr. King provides for us an example of how this portrait of a graduate can leverage these characteristics to make a positive impact on their fellow man. Of course, we can only hope that our students will make an impact of the scope and scale of Dr. King, but at its heart that is the magnetic draw to teaching that brought us all into the field.

And so, on Monday we will remember all that Dr. King did for this country and help our children to understand that contributing to something bigger than ourselves with the gifts we have will be how our current students and our graduates live out the above portrait.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dave
