Upper School Math Teacher

Spartanburg Day School is seeking  a full-time instructor of mathematics for the 2024-2025 school year. This position joins a department known for its intellectual curiosity and commitment to offering a wide variety of courses that speak to student interest and challenge. The mathematics department, like other departments, enjoys the autonomy to develop courses, pedagogies, and assessments based on sound research and developmentally appropriate practice. In addition to a progression of courses leading to calculus and statistics, the mathematics department offers a number of electives that enhance its college-preparatory curriculum. 

This position is well suited for motivated professionals who are creative, flexible, and energetic and desire the freedom to teach unique math courses at the Advanced Placement, honors, standard, and elective levels.

The selected applicant will be responsible for teaching intermediate and advanced Upper School mathematics courses. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach 5-6 sections of Mathematics, which may include both core and elective classes

  • Serve as a student advisor or co-advisor in the Upper School.

  • Partner with colleagues to create and update course curriculum

  • Assess students’ academic performance, including regular grading and timely feedback

  • Provide 1:1 support to students during midday flex periods and before and after school

  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with teaching practices and educational trends

  • Additional responsibilities may include sponsoring extra-curricular activities, advising, and/or coaching.

Ideally, strong candidates will possess at least three years of experience teaching mathematics. A bachelor’s degree in mathematics or STEM-related field is required, while a master’s degree is preferred. Club sponsorship and/or coaching experience are a bonus. Other skills necessary for the position include effective verbal and written communication, a desire to develop meaningful relationships with students, colleagues, and families, and an abiding sense of humor. The start date for this position is August 1, 2024.
