Middle School Literature & Writing Teacher

Spartanburg Day School is seeking a Middle School literature and writing faculty member for the 2024-25 school year. The Middle School faculty member will design and implement an educational curriculum in literature and writing for sixth-grade students as well as act as an advisor for a small group of sixth-grade students. 


EDUCATION

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education or a related subject, required

  • Master’s degree, preferred

  • State teaching license, preferred but not mandatory


EXPERIENCE

  • Previous teaching experience with middle-school-aged children or upper elementary-aged children, preferred

  • Thorough understanding of pedagogy and the best practices in education.

  • Ability to design lessons that engagingly teach curriculum and content, applying various teaching methods including discussions, demonstrations, direct instruction, and individual or collaborative projects and research.

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage classroom behavior.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Plan and develop an engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and SDS curriculum guidelines.

  • Design and present individual lesson plans in one or more academic subjects using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to various learning styles and methods.

  • Prepare materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluate, correct, and grade student performance.

  • Discuss academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise.

  • Monitor students’ progress throughout the year and evaluate preparedness for secondary (upper) school.

  • Communicate all progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or division head.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents.

  • Enforce safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.

  • Maintain required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.

  • Find joy in teaching, mentoring, and coaching middle school-aged students.

  • Exhibit flexibility, curiosity, and a positive approach to student and school challenges and opportunities.
     

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Monitor halls, study periods, and dining commons with other faculty and staff.

  • Maintain knowledge of research, developments, and best practices.

  • Sponsoring a student organization or coaching an athletic team.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
